This article answers the question “How much does the LSAT cost?” and reveals the various other fees associated with the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). All fees are paid in U.S. dollars to the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). These calculations (referenced below) are separate from any LSAT prep course expenses.
So, How Much Does the LSAT Cost?
The basic fee for the LSAT is $190. This is a per-test registration fee.
Auxiliary fees
Depending on your situation, you might be on the hook for additional expenses. Let’s take a look at these.
Change of test date
The fee to change your LSAT test date is $125. LSAC allows you to request to take your exam on a different date within the current testing year, provided you make the request before your original testing date has passed. If, however, the original testing date has passed, you may withdraw your registration.”
Change of test center
The fee to change your LSAT test center (i.e. location) is $125. LSAC allows you to change your test center if (1) your original testing date has not yet passed and (2) space is available at the requested test center.
Nonpublished test center
In the event that you live more than 100 miles from an available published test center and are not able to travel to published test center to take the test, LSAC gives you the option to request that an additional testing center be established for you, in order to meet your needs. The fee for establishing a nonpublished test center in the U.S. is $295, and the fee to do so internationally is $390.
Hand-scored exam
LSAC offers test-takers the option to have a test scored by hand. The fee to do so is $100. This request may be made after you have received your LSAT Score Report and must be made no later than 40 days after the date of the test taken.
Accepted forms of payment
LSAC accepts payment via the following credit cards: American Express, DISCOVER, MasterCard, and VISA. According to LSAC, “If you live outside of the United States, your country’s taxes and exchange rate may affect the fee.” You may register online or by phone.
Refunds & fee waivers
Refunds
If you cancel your LSAT registration, LSAC will refund you $50.
Fee waivers
As part of its “mission to reduce barriers for determined law school applicants” LSAC offers a possible LSAT fee waiver in the case of “extreme need”. To apply for a fee waiver, you must do so at least 6 weeks before the registration deadline for your desired testing date.
